Que vois-je ? Que vois-je lorsque je me tiens devant une œuvre de Jérémie Lenoir ? Que vois-je qui me fait, d’emblée, me poser cette question-là ? Prenons une photographie, presque au hasard, et regardons-la sans, pour l’instant, convoquer son titre, ce recours pour amateurs de sujets. C’est gris. C’est plus ou moins gris, à la façon d’un camaïeu, variant les valeurs, d’un gris clair tendant vers le blanc à un gris sombre, presque noir. C’est plat. Enfin presque, tant les jeux lumineux qu’instaurent ces gris tendent, parfois, légèrement, à creuser le plan, pour venir y nicher quelque chose comme de l’espace. Un peu. Peut-être.
What do I see? What do I see when I stand in front of a work by Jérémie Lenoir? What do I see that, right away, compels me to ask myself that question? Let’s take a photograph, almost at random, and look at it, for the moment without summoning its title, that recourse for lovers of art-historical “issues.” It’s gray. It’s more or less gray, like a camaïeu, the tones varying from a light gray going towards white to a dark gray, almost black. It's flat. Or almost, so much the play of light introduced by these grays reaches out, at times, slightly, delving into the picture plane, to nestle something like space inside it. A bit. Perhaps.

Un espace, donc, s’offre à notre regard. Il tend vers le plan mais, à certains moments, s’incurve légèrement. Il n’est pas uniforme, car au jeu sur les valeurs sombres ou claires, vient s’entrelacer un autre jeu, discret mais si visible, pourtant, dans ce lieu gris : des lignes, enfin des sortes de linéaments, comme la trace d’un ver sur une écorce, ou l’empreinte laissée par on ne sait quelle plante filiforme, parcourent ce fond comme s’ils venaient le ronger. Qu’est-ce ? Je veux dire est-ce autre chose que ce gris, autre chose qu’une présence plus concentrée, plus sombre aussi, à certains endroits, de ce gris unique qui sature le visible ? On dirait des traces. Mais de quoi ? Et, à écrire ce mot – traces – quelque chose d’autre, du fait même de la puissance du langage, se donne à voir. Au fait, ce gris de fond que des linéaments traversent, n’est-il pas fait, lui aussi, de tant de traces entremêlées ?
A space therefore offers itself to our gaze. It reaches out towards the picture plane but, at certain moments, bends slightly. It’s not uniform, because the play of dark or light tones is interwoven with another type of visual play, discreet but nevertheless highly visible in this gray place: lines, or rather something like lineaments, like the trails left by a worm on bark or the imprint of some unidentified threadlike plant, moving through the background as if they’d come to gnaw at it. What is it? What I mean to say is, is it something more than this gray, something more than the presence, more compressed, and darker in some areas, of this unique gray that saturates what’s visible? They seem to be traces. But of what? And, in writing down this word—traces—something else, thanks to the very power of language, allows itself to be seen. In fact, this background gray, crossed by lineaments, isn’t it, too, made up of so many intertwined traces, so many intertwined marks?

Regarder sans lire, regarder sans chercher un titre, telle une fausse solution, c’est prendre le temps, différer le moment où, peut-être, à cause des mots, on verra moins bien encore, car on reconnaîtra. Que vois-je, alors, devant cette photographie de Jérémie Lenoir, maintenant que mon regard fouille en elle sans savoir ce qu’il cherche. Tiens, j’ai dit que tout était gris, mais ces quelques taches, en bas à droite de l’œuvre, ne sont-elles pas marron ? Je ne l’avais pas vu. Je ne suis pas certain de ce que je vois, ni même des mots que j’emploie pour le décrire, mais cette indécision même fait surgir quelque chose en moi, de l’ordre du souvenir, quelque chose qu’aucun titre ne peut me procurer : je songe à la peinture. Pas à un tableau précis, non, même si camaïeu, grisaille, lumière, trace, sont bien des mots empruntés à l’histoire de cet art-là. Mais à ce que j’appellerais la mémoire de mes sensations. Je ne sais pas ce que je vois mais j’éprouve, physiquement, quelque chose dont ma mémoire et mon corps ont conservé l’empreinte, et que je reconnais. Cette sensation, cette façon d’être aveuglé par le visible pour mieux éprouver, dans la durée, dans le temps offert et saisi, la texture même du monde, c’est en me tenant face à des tableaux que je l’ai parfois éprouvée. Pourtant ceci est une photographie, une image plate de 120 x 120 cm. Je vais donc lire son titre, car Jérémie Lenoir, toujours, prend soin d’accompagner ainsi chacune de ses images. Le voici : Plate-forme, Gennevilliers, 2019.
Looking without reading, looking without searching for a title, like a false solution, means taking the time, delaying the moment when, perhaps, thanks to words, we will see it even less well, because we recognize it. What do I see, then, in front of this photograph by Jérémie Lenoir, now that my gaze is scouring it without knowing what it is looking for? Well, I’d said everything was gray, but those couple of patches, on the bottom right of the image, aren’t they brown? I hadn't seen that. I’m not sure about what I’m seeing, or even about the words I’m using to describe it, but this uncertainty makes something rise up in me, something close to memory, something no title can provide: I’m thinking of painting. Not one specific canvas, not even if camaïeu, grisaille, light, mark are in fact words borrowed from the history of painting. But of what I would call the memory of my sensations. I don't know what I’m seeing, but I feel, physically, something imprinted on my memory and body, something I recognize. This sensation, this way of being blinded by the visible in order to feel it more strongly, over the long term, in the time offered and grasped, the very texture of the world—it’s by standing in front of paintings that I’ve sometimes felt it. But this is a photograph, a flat image measuring 120-x-120 centimeters. I’ll therefore read its title, because Jérémie Lenoir always takes the time to accompany each of his images in this way. Here it is: Platform, Gennevilliers, 2019.

Intrusion étrange de la trivialité du réel au moment même où ma mémoire se réveillait, attisée par mes sensations. Réveil brutal, qui vient rajouter l’énigme à l’énigme. Ça, c’est une plateforme ? Ce jeu délicieux du gris balayé, du gris brossé, du gris gravé, c’est un lieu utilitaire, un de ces lieux bruyants, hostiles tant le labeur y est mécanisé ? Des camions arrivent, d’autres partent, on les charge, on les décharge. Personne n’habite ici, c’est un lieu de passage et de peine. Plateforme : certes ce mot-là peut encore, pour un instant, entretenir ma délectation sensuelle et faire entendre, au-delà de la trivialité sans phrase, quelque chose comme une forme plate – un tableau, par exemple. Mais il y a aussi ces autres mots – Gennevilliers, 2019 – qui n’incitent guère à la rêverie.
The triviality of the real world strangely intrudes at the very moment when my memory, fueled by sensations, was awakening. A brutal awakening, adding enigma to this enigma. This—this is a platform? This delicious play of swept gray, brushed gray, engraved gray, this is a utilitarian place, one of these noisy places, hostile with mechanized labor? Some trucks arrive, others leave, are loaded, are unloaded. No one lives here; it's a place of transit and sorrow. Platform: certainly, this particular word can still, for a moment, sustain my sensual delight and make me hear, beyond the wordless triviality, something like a flat form—a painting, for example. But there are other words—Gennevilliers, 2019—that hardly encourage reverie.

Je vois sans comprendre. Je lis et je comprends moins encore que lorsque je m’abandonnais au risque du seul regard. Le titre n’est pas une clef mais une question. Pourquoi, devant le travail de Jérémie Lenoir, suis-je incapable de reconnaître le réel le plus proche, et le plus ordinaire, lors même que, face à ses photos, c’est à la peinture abstraite que je songe ? C’est bien la question, celle qui rend le réveil si brutal, celle que poursuit Jérémie Lenoir de travaux en travaux. Ce paysage en mutation, ces lieux travaillés que l’homme ne cesse de modifier jusqu’à épuisement, ce paysage qui est, d’évidence, notre paysage, que nous soyons habitants de Gennevilliers ou de Las Vegas, le voyons-nous seulement ? La transfiguration du paysage qu’opère le travail de Lenoir n’est pas simple déplacement dans lequel la réalité ne serait que prétexte à une translation de la photographie vers la peinture. Certes, l’artiste parle, à juste titre, de « l’instauration d’une véritable confusion entre photographie et peinture ». Mais cette confusion, précisément, se fait sur un mode dialectique, à la façon d’une lutte, durant laquelle il s’agit, pour le photographe, d’user de la force du peintre, afin d’affronter, ensemble, le réel si aveuglant.
I see without understanding. I read and understand even less than when I’d abandoned myself to the risk of simply looking. The title isn’t an answer, but a question. Why, in Jérémie Lenoir's work, am I incapable of recognizing the closest, most mundane reality, whereas in front of these photos, abstract painting comes to my mind? This indeed is the question, the one that makes the awakening so brutal, the one Jérémie Lenoir pursues from one image to the next. This changing landscape, these places that mankind never stops modifying to the point of exhaustion, this landscape that is, obviously, our landscape, whether we’re living in Gennevilliers or Las Vegas, do we even see it? The transfiguration of the landscape that Lenoir's work brings about is not a simple displacement in which reality is only a pretext to translate photography into painting. Yes, the artist speaks, justifiably, of “the establishment of genuine confusion between photography and painting.” But this confusion occurs in a dialectical mode, like a struggle during which the photographer must use the strength of a painter in order to face the reality that is so blinding.

Lenoir, pas plus que nombre de photographes de sa génération, ne croit à la capacité de la photographie documentaire à nous révéler la vérité du monde. Non qu’il redoute l’objectivité mais, bien au contraire, parce qu’il lui semble nécessaire, afin de tendre vers celle-ci, d’enrichir sa photographie de moyens nouveaux. En 2013, déjà, il conçoit une installation, White Spaces, en imprimant des photographies de paysages sur des lais de tissu plus ou moins opaques. A ce sujet, il écrit alors :
Lenoir, not unlike many photographers of his generation, doesn’t believe in documentary photography’s ability to reveal the world’s truth to us. Not that he fears objectivity but, on the contrary, because in order to move towards it, he believes it necessary to enrich his photography with new means. As early as 2013, he’d already conceived an installation, White Spaces, by printing landscape photographs on lengths of fabric that were more or less opaque. On this subject, he wrote:


« "Nous ne croyons plus que la vérité reste vérité sans ses voiles ; nous avons trop vécu pour croire cela. Nous faisons maintenant une question de décence de ne pas vouloir tout voir nu, de ne pas assister à tout, de ne pas chercher à tout ‘savoir’." La vérité est-elle si difficile à accepter qu’un voile lui offrirait le prisme de la pudeur, masquerait l’obscène ou l’insupportable dans une métaphysique où l’apparence triompherait sur l’essence ? Le voile, comme mensonge profitable et stimulant, serait dès lors constitutif de la vérité. C’est ce que soutient Baudelaire dans cette logique nietzschéenne lorsqu’il aspire à "être ramené vers les dioramas dont la magie brutale et énorme sait [lui] imposer une utile illusion. Ces choses, parce qu’elles sont fausses, sont infiniment plus près du vrai ; tandis que la plupart de nos paysagistes sont des menteurs, justement car ils ont négligé de mentir¹." »
“’We no longer believe that the truth remains true without its veils; we have lived too long to believe that. We are now making it a matter of decency to not want to see everything naked, to not witness everything, to not seek to ‘know’ everything.’ Is the truth so difficult to accept that a veil would offer him the prism of modesty, would mask the obscene or the unbearable in a metaphysics in which appearance would triumph over essence? The veil, as a profitable and stimulating lie, would from then on constitute the truth. This is what Baudelaire supports in that Nietzschean logic when he longs to ‘be brought back to the dioramas whose brutal and enormous magic can impose a useful illusion on [him]. These things, because they are false, are infinitely closer to the true; whereas the majority of our landscape artists are liars, precisely because they have neglected to lie¹.’”


Aujourd’hui, pas de voile où le paysage viendrait s’abîmer dans la transparence, mais un dispositif rigoureux, sans cesse réitéré, que l’artiste nomme, à juste titre, protocole de réalisation : les photos sont prises à partir d’un avion, à une altitude constante de 1500 pieds, avec une optique fixe, à un horaire identique, aux alentours de midi. Moment fécond pour ceux qui recherchent la platitude : moment sans ombres, où la colorimétrie est la plus neutre, où les reliefs sont comme écrasés. La platitude, ainsi, est construite. Elle est une illusion, mais une illusion utile, source d’aveuglement et de révélation. Louis Aragon avait, pour désigner cela, cette fécondation du réel par la fiction qui est le propre de l’art, une expression juste, en forme d’oxymore : le mentir-vrai. Que vois-je du monde quand c’est par le prisme d’une réduction de celui-ci à la grisaille qu’il m’est donné à contempler ? La grisaille c’est un procédé de peintre. Jérémie Lenoir ne cesse de le rappeler : J’agis en peintre, pas en photographe. Soit, mais en peintre qui, par le voilement du monde, cherche une autre forme de dévoilement, celle de l’opacité du réel. Dans le gris, tout se fond, sauf les traces. Il suffit d’un peu de lumière, ou d’un peu d’ombre, pour que la couleur devienne signe, tel le hiéroglyphe d’un monde en voie d’uniformisation. S’il se fait peintre, Lenoir n’en agit pas moins comme un archéologue, relevant les inscriptions que laisse derrière lui le contemporain. Dernier inventaire avant décès d’une planète où une trace ressemble à une autre trace.
Today, there is no veil where the landscape would come to perish in transparency but a rigorous system, ceaselessly repeated, which the artist rightly calls his creative protocol: his photos are taken from an airplane, at a constant altitude of 1,500 feet, with a fixed focal length, at the same hour, around noon. A rewarding moment for those who seek flatness: a moment without shadows, when the colorimetry is the most neutral, when the topography appears evened out. The flatness, thus, is a construct. It’s an illusion, but a useful illusion, a source of blindness and revelation. To name this, this fertilization of reality by fiction that is characteristic of art, Louis Aragon had an apt expression in the form of an oxymoron: the mentir-vrai, the true-lie. What do I see of the world when contemplating it through the prism of its reduction to grisaille? Grisaille is a painter's technique. Jérémie Lenoir never stops reminding us: I act as a painter, not a photographer. So be it, but as a painter who, through veiling the world, seeks another form of unveiling, that of the opacity of reality. In gray, everything blends together, except traces. All it takes is a little bit of light, or a little bit of shadow, for the color to become a sign, like the hieroglyph of a world in the process of standardization. And if he’s acting as a painter, Lenoir is no less acting as an archaeologist, noting the inscriptions the contemporary world has left behind. The last inventory before the death of a planet on which one trace resembles another.

Ce que l’artiste met ici au jour, du fait même de ses procédures uniformisantes, c’est une uniformisation plus radicale, qui ne doit rien à sa pratique, mais tout au monde tel qu’il va. Cela s’appelle l’anthropocène : le terrible aujourd’hui, l’ère où l’homme est devenu le facteur déterminant de la disparition de l’homme – et cela commence par l’évanouissement du divers. Il faut regarder les photographies de Lenoir avec l’œil du cartographe afin de constater que des formes simples, géométriques – des constantes – ne cessent de revenir. Des carrés (Chantier, Las Vegas, 2013), des cercles (Stockage, Saint-Cyr-en-Val, 2013), voire la combinaison des deux (Chantier, Achères, 2012). A l’origine, ces travaux sont le fruit d’une recherche de longue haleine sur la frontière ville-campagne. A regarder les œuvres, on voit que c’est un autre combat qui se joue désormais, plus redoutable encore que l’évanouissement du rural au profit de l’urbain, qui signa l’histoire du XX° siècle. Car désormais, si frontière il y a, frontière mouvante, frontière dévorante, c’est bien entre la grisaille qui absorbe et le vif qui succombe (Carrière, Guitrancourt, 2012). Le gris global se substitue aux couleurs locales, vernaculaires. Cet homme qui a longuement regardé Turner le sait, lorsque l’opacité recouvre les formes, c’est une dévoration : une cannibalisation du réel. Tout s’uniformise, se réduit, faisant de la réduction propre aux procédures de Jérémie Lenoir un écho, nécessaire, à l’entropie en marche. Cercles, carrés, traces, le monde devient abstrait. Le recours à la peinture dite abstraite, l’usage de la mémoire que l’artiste conserve de cette peinture – il nomme ainsi, comme sources, Rothko, Tàpies, Soulages, Noland et quelques autres – n’est pas un détour mais la voie qu’impose ce qui a lieu. A monde abstrait, peinture abstraite. Baudelaire ne pensait pas les choses autrement, lui qui réclamait un art malade pour dire un siècle malade.
What the artist brings to light here, by the very fact of his standardizing technique, is a more radical standardization that owes nothing to his practice but everything to the world as it is. This is called the Anthropocene: the terrible today, the era in which mankind has become the determining factor in its own disappearance—beginning with the loss of diversity. One must look at Lenoir's photographs with a cartographer's eye to see that simple, geometric shapes—constants—keep coming back. Squares (Chantier, Las Vegas, 2013), circles (Stockage, Saint-Cyr-en-Val, 2013), or even a combination of the two (Chantier, Achères, 2012). In the beginning, these works resulted from long-term research on the urban-rural border. Looking at the works, we see that another battle is now being waged, even more formidable than the disappearance of the rural in favor of the urban that characterized the history of the twentieth century. Because from now on, if there is a border, a moving border, a devouring border, it’s between the gray that absorbs and the brightness that succumbs (Carrière, Guitrancourt, 2012). The overall gray replaces local, vernacular colors. This artist who has long looked at Turner knows that when opacity covers shapes, it devours them: cannibalizing the real. Everything is standardized, reduced, making the reduction specific to Jérémie Lenoir's technique an echo, necessary, to the entropy underway. Circles, squares, marks, the world becomes abstract. The recourse of so-called abstract painting, the use of memory that the artist retains from this type of painting—he thus names, as sources, Rothko, Tàpies, Soulages, Noland and a few others—is not a detour but the path that imposes what takes place. An abstract world, abstract painting. Baudelaire, he who called for a sick art to depict a sick century, did not believe otherwise.

Au fait, où se trouve l’homme, dans de telles images ? Au sens strict, nulle part. Ici règne le vide, comme si, dans ce monde saturé, le trop plein avait abouti au rien. Cette verticalité ne fait pas qu’aplanir les choses, elle abolit toute sensation que le monde vu est un espace parcourable. Là où, autrefois, la peinture de paysage s’offrait comme une exploration horizontale, faite de plans hiérarchisés, incitant à la rêverie d’un voyage sans but, Lenoir nous met face au mur, là où la vue se brouille, et les repères aussi. A être ainsi convoqué, face-à-face avec ce réel offusquant, une autre forme d’attention, pourtant, s’éveille, comme si, soudain, une profondeur insoupçonnée s’ouvrait dans la platitude des images. A condition de ralentir, à condition de ne pas céder à la tentation obscène du tout voir, tout montrer, tout comprendre, quelque chose, qui fait appel au corps tout autant qu’au regard, aux sens plus et mieux encore qu’à une raison désincarnée, émerge. Cette animation du gris qui, malgré la grande réduction, donne vie à la matière, cette façon, discrète, dont une surface se creuse pour avouer de quelle épaisseur elle est le fruit (Carrière, Larchant, 2012), nous rend un peu de ce que l’on croyait perdu : ce temps du paysage qui appelle un regard stratigraphique. Celui de l’archéologue, celui du chasseur de traces : cet homme qui, dans les ruines d’un monde, sait débusquer ce qui reste, quand presque tout semble avoir disparu.
By the way, where is mankind in such images? Strictly speaking, nowhere. Here emptiness reigns, as if, in this saturated world, overabundance had come to nothing. This verticality not only flattens things out, it abolishes any feeling that the seen world is a walkable space. Where, in the past, landscape painting offered itself as a horizontal exploration made up of hierarchical planes, encouraging the daydream of a purposeless journey, Lenoir puts us face to the wall, where the view is blurred, as are any landmarks. Summoned in this way, face-to-face with this blinding reality, another kind of attention is awakened, as if, suddenly, an unimagined depth were to open up within the images’ flatness. As long as we slow down, as long as we don’t give in to the obscene temptation of seeing everything, showing everything, understanding everything, something else emerges, something that calls upon the body as much as the gaze, to the senses even more and better than disembodied reason. The vitality of the gray which, despite the great reduction, gives life to the matter, the way, discreet, in which a surface is hollowed out in order to concede the thickness of the result (Carrière, Larchant, 2012), gives us back a little bit of what we thought we’d lost: this time of landscape that beckons a stratigraphic gaze. The gaze of archaeologists, of those hunting for traces: of those who, amongst the ruins of the world, know how to find what remains when nearly everything seems to have disappeared.
