DUST est un travail photographique réalisé entre 2015 et 2017 à Salt Lake City aux États-Unis. Ce projet parcourt la frontière entre l’eau et la terre tout autour du lac salé, là où s’installent les exploitations humaines de sodium, magnésium, potassium et pétrole. Rien n’est retouché ou modifié dans les images ; les formes sont composées par les machines ou les écoulements, alors que les couleurs sont l’œuvre d'algues, de micro-organismes ou d’additifs accélérateurs d’évaporation. DUST poursuit mon étude du paysage en expérimentant les limites du médium photographique et nous met face à la perte de sens et d’identité dont nos territoires contemporains sont les premiers témoins.

DUST is a photographic work produced from 2015 to 2017 in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. This project follows the border between water and land around the Great Salt Lake, focusing on the industrial salt, magnesium, potassium and oil extraction sites. The resulting images were not modified or retouched in any way; the forms they contain are composed of machines and runoff, and the colors are the work of algae, microbes and additives used to speed up the extraction process. DUST pushes my exploration of landscape forward to the limits of the photographic medium, confronting us directly with the loss of meaning and identity to which our contemporary terrain is the prime witness.

Je me suis longtemps demandé quelle était ma légitimité à parler du paysage en tant que photographe, quelle oblique pouvait tracer ma sensibilité dans la vision, la compréhension ou la restitution d’un élément aussi concret et connu. Ma seule certitude, après quelques années à l’arpenter, est que le prisme de nos individualités, de notre histoire et de notre culture occidentale lui interdit toute unanimité, le préserve de toute affirmation dogmatique : il n’existe pas de Vérité du paysage. Là est peut-être tout l’intérêt et la complexité de cette notion. Là se trouve probablement le désir d’exploration et l’espace de création de l’artiste. Le paysage reste une interprétation du réel, une traduction de notre monde par le langage ou l’image, un prélèvement subjectif dans lequel s’entremêlent les éléments physiques qui le composent, le temps qui le façonne, et l’émotion de celui qui le regarde. L’imbrication de ces trois facteurs gravitant selon leurs propres lois constitue l’heuristique de mon travail et la ligne directrice du projet DUST. Réalisé entre 2015 et 2017 à Salt Lake City, DUST éprouve notre rapport au paysage et aux images, et pose la question du « réalisme » dans le sens, les discours et les représentations de notre contemporanéité.
I have spent a lot of time wondering what makes it legitimate for me, as a photographer, to talk about landscape. What oblique path could trace out my sensibility in seeing, comprehending and restoring an element that is so concrete and familiar? After years of roaming through this field, I have become certain that the prism of our individuality and history, and of our Western culture, makes any complete agreement impossible and protects us from dogmatic assertions: the Truth of a landscape does not exist. This may be where all the interest and complexity of that idea are found. It is probably the location of both an artist’s desire to explore and the space in which he or she creates. A landscape remains an interpretation of the real, a means by which our world is translated into words or images; it is a subjective extraction that brings together the physical elements that compose it, the time that shapes it and the emotion of anyone who views it. The intertwining of these three factors, each according to its own laws, forms the heuristic of my work and has been the guiding principle of the DUST project. Created from 2015 to 2017 in Salt Lake City, DUST tests our relationship to landscapes and images; it explores the question of “realism” in the meaning, the discourse and the representation of our contemporary world.

L’extraction qu’un photographe ou un peintre décide d’opérer sur le réel est rarement fortuite. Dans mon cas, je choisis par exemple les régions à étudier, biaisant dès le départ toute l’intégrité d’une intention naïve ou arbitraire, et j’opte pour un point de vue zénithal et distancié, évacuant toute la contextualisation d’une perspective documentaire. Mon protocole de prise de vues permet ensuite d’observer le territoire avec une certaine objectivité : les espaces sélectionnés sont reliés entre eux par une thématique de recherche propre à chaque projet ; ils sont parcourus de nombreuses fois pendant deux à trois ans pour en suivre l’évolution ; et ils sont restitués en respectant une homogénéité de lumière, de composition et d’échelle. Comme l’écrivait Paul Valéry, la plus grande liberté naît de la plus grande rigueur¹…
The extraction that a photographer or painter chooses to carry out on the real is not usually an incidental matter. In my case, I deliberately choose the regions to explore—which, from the outset, skews the integrity of any naive or arbitrary intention—and I opt for a zenithal and distanced point of view, which eliminates the contextualization of a documentary perspective. My approach allows me to observe the territory with a certain objectivity: the selected areas are connected by a research theme specific to each project; they are flown over many times during a period of two to three years, so that their changes can be seen; they are rendered with respect for the homogeneity of light, composition, and scale. As Paul Valéry wrote, “The greatest liberty is born of the greatest rigor....”¹

Le paysage est donc mon modèle sans être pour autant le véritable sujet d’étude. Il est à la fois work-in-progress et œuvre en devenir, mais ne demeure dans cet exercice qu’une entité plate, graphique et dépersonnalisée par l’altitude. Ce qui m’intéresse sur le fond, avant même de prendre un avion pour le survoler et un appareil pour l’encadrer, c’est justement tout ce qu’on ne peut lire ou comprendre en l’observant ; c’est l’objet culturel qu’il incarne malgré lui. Un paysage, quel qu’il soit, s’inscrit dans un processus historique, économique, politique, démographique… Si c’est évident pour une industrie ou une zone pavillonnaire, c’est tout aussi vrai pour un château ou un désert aride ; l’homme choisit ce qu’il occupe, ce qu’il protège, ce qu’il exploite, ce qu’il délaisse. Un paysage a une fonction.
Landscapes are thus my model, without being the real subject of the work. A landscape is simultaneously a work-in-progress and an oeuvre that is coming to be; such a work, however, resides in this exercise only as a graphic, flat entity that has been depersonalized by altitude. My fundamental interest on the ground—even before I get on an airplane to do a flyover or pick up a camera to frame a shot—is in everything that cannot be read or understood through observation: the cultural object that is embodied there despite itself. Every landscape, whatever it may be, is located within a process that is historical, economic, political, demographic and so on…. If that seems obvious for industrial sites or residential areas, it is just as true for a chateau or an arid desert; human beings decide where they live, what they will defend, what they will cultivate, and what they will abandon to neglect. A landscape has a function.

Depuis maintenant plus de dix ans, je tente de contextualiser cette fonction et de la projeter dans une logique d’évolution. Une sorte d’anthropologie du paysage. L’objectif était tout d’abord de savoir si ce que nous construisons ou transformons aujourd’hui conserve encore un lien avec l’histoire et l’identité de sa région. Il apparaît au contraire que le territoire « contemporain », celui que nous traversons et pratiquons chaque jour, s’adapte à des contraintes modernes d’urgence, de rentabilité et d’efficacité plutôt que de se conformer à des héritages désuets. Pour mettre en exergue ces mutations sociétales, j’oriente alors mes séries sur l’étude de lignes et de frontières où viennent s’agréger ou se confronter des divergences identitaires, des prodigalités géographiques et des turbulences temporelles : la frontière ville-campagne en Île-de-France ou ville-désert à Las Vegas, l’axe de reconversion du patrimoine industriel Arras-Anvers, les bords du Great Salt Lake en Utah... Partout, le paysage s’universalise, se multiplie, se copie-colle dans ses formes, ses missions et ses usages. Le vernaculaire ne semble pas soutenir l’accélération de notre époque.
For more than ten years now, I have been trying to contextualize this function and to conceive of it in terms of the logic of its development: to undertake a sort of anthropology of the landscape. At the outset, the objective was to know whether what we are constructing or transforming today is still connected to the history and identity of its surroundings. However, what appeared instead was that “contemporary” spaces—those that we pass through and make use of each day—have been tailored to the modern constraints of immediate need, profitability and efficiency, and do not conform to any outdated heritage. To bring out these transformations of society, I began to orient my series towards the study of the lines and borders where divergent identities, geographical extravagance and temporal turbulence meet or confront one another: the urban-rural boundary of Île-de-France and the city-desert border of Las Vegas, the Arras-Antwerp industrial revitalization zone, the shores of the Great Salt Lake in Utah. All around us, the landscape has been universalized, has proliferated, and has been cut-and-pasted in its shapes, purposes and uses. The vernacular does not seem to have kept pace with the speed of our day and age.

Le développement technique satisfait aux ambitions de notre société ou à son appétence économique, mais ne se montre capable d’engendrer qu’une uniformisation de nos environnements de vie et un lissage de nos diversités culturelles et historiques. En devançant nos besoins, le paysage nous prouve alors une seule chose : à notre échelle individuelle et microscopique de temps et de cosmos, nous sommes les spectateurs silencieux d’un effacement larvé de nos identités.
This is a strange feeling. Technical development fulfills our society’s ambitions or economic cravings, but it has not shown that it can do anything other than standardize the environments in which we live; it wears away the layers of cultural and historical diversity. By outpacing our needs, the landscape proves a single thing to us: on the individual and microscopic scale that we occupy in time and the cosmos, we are silent spectators of the latent erosion of our identities.

Le phénomène n’est pas si récent. En 1966, l’artiste Tony Smith se sentait déjà préoccupé par le paysage construit sans précédent culturel². Nous pourrions situer sa naissance à la révolution industrielle, mais son apparition intervient surtout après la seconde guerre mondiale, lorsque se multiplient à grande échelle les zones commerciales, les plates-formes de stockage, les grands ensembles, les voies de circulation rapides… Le territoire se morcelle, se désagrège et se renouvelle dans un chaos précipité, dans une force entropique de désorganisation. Gilles Clément parlera de Tiers paysage³, Marc Augé de non-lieux⁴.
This phenomenon is not very recent. In 1966, the artist Tony Smith was already concerned about this “artificial landscape without cultural precedent.”² We can pinpoint its first appearance with the Industrial Revolution, but it became particularly prominent after the Second World War, when there was a large-scale proliferation of commercial zones, storage platforms, housing complexes, modern highway systems, and so on. The territory was fragmented, broken down, and built up again in a frantic chaos, an entropic, disorganizing force. Gilles Clément calls it the “third-landscape,”³ and Marc Augé speaks of “non-places.”⁴

Dans les décennies qui suivent, l’effervescence autour des problématiques du paysage se décuple. Qu’il s’agisse de son exploitation comme de sa préservation, des inquiétudes écologiques comme de nos stratégies d’aménagement, le sujet devient omniprésent et se transforme en cause. Le rôle et la place de l’homme y sont le plus souvent mis en abîme dans une imagerie supplicative et une sémantique réquisitoire, imprimant dans le débat actuel un sentimentalisme déviant parfois au prophétique. Face à cette rhétorique, la nécessité se fait alors pour moi pressante de rompre avec la posture du constat qui semble confesser une impossible réinvention.
In the ensuing decades, the tumult around issues relating to the landscape has multiplied. Whether the focus has been on developing or conserving these areas, whether ecological concerns or development strategies have been at the fore, the topic has become ubiquitous and has been turned into a cause. In this, human beings are transforming their work and place into a sort of mise en abyme, reflexively using images that implore and a rhetoric that accuses, suffusing current public debate with a sentimentality that sometimes diverges into the prophetic. In this context, it became necessary for me to abandon the position where one says what is, a position that seemed to suggest that reinvention was impossible.

Au fil des projets, mon attention se focalise sur les espaces aussi récents que vides, aussi matérialisés que déshumanisés. Et peu à peu, les représentations que j’en livre évoluent irrémédiablement vers l’abstraction. Cette direction revendiquée et assumée m’a d’abord permis de puiser dans mes propres références picturales ; dans l’expressionnisme de Barnett Newman ou Mark Rothko, dans les géométries de Kasimir Malevitch ou Kenneth Noland, dans les matières d’Antoni Tapiès ou Pierre Soulages... L’abstraction m’a ensuite offert un axe conceptuel de remise en question du médium photographique dans sa capacité à reproduire le réel ; et du paysage dans sa capacité à faire sens. Elle instaure un jeu de dialogues et d’interrogations entre notre perception du milieu et ses représentations.
In the course of my projects, my attention was drawn to spaces that are as recent as they are empty and as tangible as they are dehumanized. Bit by bit, the way in which I represented them became increasingly and irremediably abstract. This direction, which I espoused and embraced, initially allowed me to draw on my artistic references: the expressionism of Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko, the geometrics of Kasimir Malevitch and Kenneth Noland, the materiality of Antoni Tàpies and Pierre Soulages…. Abstraction went on to provide me with a conceptual tool for exploring the limits of both the photographic medium’s ability to reproduce the real and the landscape’s ability to make sense. It introduces a play of dialogue and questioning between our perception of the environment and the way in which the latter is represented.

On sait qu’un paysage est à la fois une portion du monde et l’œuvre que l’artiste choisit d’en extraire. Mais ici, la perte du réel par la perspective, la platitude⁵, la neutralité du visuel nous fait douter aussi bien sur la nature du sujet que sur celle du medium. Le vocabulaire qui nous vient à l’esprit pour décrire ce que l’on voit n’appartient plus vraiment au champ lexical du territoire, ni à celui de la photographie. On hésite face à ce cadre inhabituel qui rend la dichotomie entre nos sentiments et le « vrai » encore plus saisissante. L’abstraction se soustrait ainsi au discours, à la morale, à l’illustration militante, et même d’une certaine façon à l’intention du photographe. Elle rend les images autonomes ; chacun peut y projeter sa propre lecture de l’œuvre, sa propre vision du paysage. Il n’y a ni vrai ni faux, ni bien ni mal ; nous sommes totalement libres de notre interprétation et il n'existe désormais plus d'autres liens avec le paysage que celui de notre propre capacité à le concevoir. Les photographies, comme le suggérait Roland Barthes, deviennent pensives⁶.
We know that a landscape is simultaneously a part of the world and a work that an artist has chosen to extract from it. Here, however, the loss of the real brought about by the perspective, the flatness⁵ and the neutrality of the imagery leads us to question not only the medium, but the very nature of the subject itself. The words that come to mind when we try to describe what we see no longer really derive from the vocabulary of either geography or photography. We falter when faced with this unusual framing, which makes the dichotomy between our feelings and the “truth” even more vivid. In this way, abstraction subtracts itself not only from discourse, morality and partisan illustration, but also, in a certain sense, from the photographer’s own intentions. It makes the images autonomous; each viewer can project his or her own reading onto the work, his or her own vision onto the landscapes. There is neither true nor false, neither good nor evil: we are all completely free to have our own interpretation. No connection to the landscape remains, other than that of our own personal capacity to conceive of it. As Roland Barthes suggested, photographs become “pensive.”⁶

Toutefois, cette posture faussement détachée et non-interventionniste ne pourrait-elle pas devenir contre-productive, voire même néfaste ? Rendre belle notre déraison, ne serait-ce pas maladroitement une stratégie d’acceptation ? Je repense alors à l’analyse de Philippe Descola qui nous explique que le paysage qu’on voit, c’est celui qu’on a appris à regarder⁷. Ces espaces capturés, je ne m’efforce pas ou ne m’amuse pas à les rendre esthétiques ; ils le sont intrinsèquement via les référentiels artistiques, souvent inconscients, de notre éducation. L’ambition de ce travail est simplement de les montrer, de les mettre en lumière, car si nous savons les trouver beaux, nous n’avons en revanche pas appris à les voir ou tout du moins à les accepter comme « paysages ».
Yet does this falsely detached and non-interventionist posture end up being counterproductive or even harmful? Would prettifying our collective madness be nothing more than an awkward strategy of acceptance? This reminds me of Philippe Descola’s analysis, in particular his remark that the landscape we see is the one we were taught to look at.⁷ To give these captured spaces aesthetic qualities has been neither my intention nor a source of entertainment for me; such spaces are already intrinsically aesthetic, because of the artistic references that we have learned, references that often remain with us unconsciously. This work simply tries to present them and shed light on them; if we know how to see their beauty, we still have not learned to see them as—or at least to accept that they are—“landscapes.”

Cette rupture de perception et de compréhension trahit un « temps » du paysage qui diffère de celui du spectateur ou de l’usager. Depuis l’origine du monde, la chronologie de la nature et du minéral se délitait dans un calendrier cosmique que l’échelle d’une vie humaine ne pouvait voir s’altérer. De nos jours, le rapport s’est inversé : la célérité vertigineuse qui transforme nos territoires nous interdit toute familiarisation à nos environnements directs. Leurs extensions et renouvellements constants tendent à nous rendre consommateurs passifs d’entités devenues fonctionnelles, utiles et formelles. Sans affect ni parenté, ces espaces synchroniques s’effacent de notre vision aussi vite qu’ils apparaissent sur nos horizons.
This perceptual and conceptual rupture exposes how the “temporality” of landscapes differs from those of the spectator and of the people who use them. Since the beginning of the world, the passage of time has been recorded in the earth’s rocks; when viewed on the scale of a human life, changes in this cosmic calendar remained invisible. Now, however, this relation has been reversed: the vertiginous speed with which our immediate surroundings are being transformed prevents us from becoming familiar with them. They are constantly being extended and renewed, making us passive consumers of entities that have become functional, expedient and formal. Devoid of feeling and kinship, these synchronous spaces are blotted out of our vision as soon as they emerge on our horizon.

Après avoir longuement arpenté et raconté les zones densément urbanisées, travailler sur le Grand Lac Salé de l’Utah apparaît comme une libération, comme un détachement au concret et au connu. Dans cet éther halluciné, l’exercice n’est plus de donner à voir la masse invisible qui nous entoure mais de proposer une cosmogonie onirique, la métaphysique d’un univers chimérique.
After having spent a good bit of time roaming through and recounting densely urban areas, I found it liberating to work at the Great Salt Lake. It was like detaching myself from the concrete and knowable. In this hallucinated ether, I was no longer concerned with finding a way to present the invisible mass that surrounds us, but instead with proposing a cosmogony of dreams, the metaphysics of a chimerical universe.

Situé à plus de 1200 mètres d’altitude, se forment aléatoirement dans ce désert aride des sillons saturés en minéraux, des nervures gorgées d’artémies colorées, des piscines inondées de terres craquelées et acidulées… Pour autant, mon leitmotiv ne change pas : tout est toujours l’œuvre de l’homme qui exploite sur une grande partie des contours du lac la richesse des sols et la haute salinité de l’eau. Ici, le cheminement et la sélection des lieux ont été déterminés en suivant la ligne de démarcation entre l’eau et la terre, là où se concentrent les bassins d’évaporation, les mines et carrières, les extractions de potassium, magnésium ou pétrole... Le niveau de l’eau, quant à lui, étalonne la densité des verts, rouges, roses, orange obtenus naturellement par la concentration de sel, d’algues ou de micro-organismes ; ou engendrés artificiellement par des additifs accélérateurs d’évaporation et les rejets des rares installations. Le décor est céleste, le commun fait défaut, la raison se dissout. Mais dans sa quiétude et sa stérilité, ses teintes et ses courbes, ses mirages et ses reflets, le Great Salt Lake exhale une force inspirante et mystique.
Located at around 4,200 feet (or more than 1,200 meters) above sea level, mineral-rich troughs take shape randomly in an arid desert; lodes brim with colorful brine shrimp; pools overflow with cracked and acidulous soil.... Yet this did not change my leitmotif: my focus is still on the work of human beings who, across most of the Lake’s shores, make use of its rich soil and its intensely saline water. In this context, the progression and selection of sites was determined by the line of demarcation between land and water; this is where the evaporation basins, the mines and quarries, and the potassium, magnesium and oil extraction operations are located. The density of color—the shades of green, red, pink, and orange resulting naturally from the concentration of salt, algae and microbes, or created artificially by additives used to speed evaporation and by the waste from the few existing facilities—is fine-tuned to the level of water. It is a celestial setting, in which nothing is ordinary and reason dissolves. Yet in its tranquility and sterility, its hues and contours, its mirages and reflections, the Great Salt Lake exudes a force that is inspiring and mystical.

Ce n’est donc certainement pas un hasard si Robert Smithson retint cet endroit pour y créer une de ses œuvres majeures. Dans les années 60, l’américain fut l’un des tout premiers artistes à sortir de l’espace des galeries et des musées pour investir le paysage. Il découvrit un terrain de jeu en mutation continuelle ; celui du vivant, des saisons, des phénomènes naturels… un univers en mouvement, travaillé de l’intérieur par un principe d’instabilité et d’usure permanente auquel la science avait donné un nom : entropie⁸. En avril 1970, il installe sa Spiral Jetty sur les rives du Great Salt Lake. L’œuvre, qui incarnera la naissance du Land Art, se destine à disparaître avec la montée des eaux ; en invitant à arpenter une préhistoire moderne⁹, l’artiste place l’entropie au cœur d’une problématique tripartite associant le paysage, le temps, et le spectateur.
It is certainly no coincidence that Robert Smithson decided to create one of his major installations in this place. In the 1960s, this American artist was one of the first to leave museum and gallery spaces behind and move out into the landscape. In it, he discovered a playground in constant transformation, subject to living beings, the seasons, all sorts of natural phenomena: a universe in motion, worked on from within by the principle of instability and permanent wear-and-tear that science refers to as “entropy.”⁸ In April 1970, Smithson constructed his Spiral Jetty on the banks of the Great Salt Lake. This earthwork sculpture, which marked the birth of Land Art, vanishes when the water level rises. By transporting us “into a world of modern prehistory,”⁹ Smithson put entropy at the center of a threefold problematic in which landscape, time, and the spectator are brought together.

Plus que jamais, cette réflexion fait sens. Alors qu’il y a 50 ans Smithson s’émerveillait de la résistance des éléments face aux vaines tentatives humaines d’exploiter le lac, le Great Salt Lake est devenu aujourd’hui un chantier titanesque et intarissable. L’activité économique redessine incessamment sa forme, redéfinit son lit. Les machines excavent le sol, déplacent la terre, collectent les monticules de sodium. L’entreprise est prométhéenne. Mais pour autant, la précision technique et l’organisation millimétrée ne modèlent ce paysage d’eau et de poussières que pour recréer inexorablement un autre paysage d’eau et de poussières. Dust to dust. La naissance et la mort se mêlent dans une force apocalyptique de construction du néant.
This reflection continues, more than ever, to make sense and create meaning. Fifty years ago, Smithson was amazed by the way in which the elements resist humanity’s vain attempts to exploit them; now, however, the Great Salt Lake has become a titanic and inexhaustible work site. Economic activity is constantly redrawing its form and redefining its basin. Machines excavate the land, displacing the earth and collecting mounds of salt. It is a Promethean undertaking. However, technical precision and meticulous organization can only—and inexorably—mold this landscape of water and dust into yet another landscape of water and dust. Dust to dust. Birth and death coalesce in an apocalyptic force that constructs the void.

Le Great Salt Lake est ainsi l’incarnation intense d’un phénomène de vacuité ubiquitaire et entropique, d’une globalisation féroce qui s’habille ici d’aplats et de tonalités éclatants mais qui ordinairement ne se remarque que par sa banalité sourde. Partout, en rompant avec nos repères identitaires et temporels, la substance et la matérialité du paysage contemporain se muent en une réalité de plus en plus abstraite, défaillante, illégitime. Dans mon travail, il ne s’agit donc plus d’opter pour une posture ou une culture plasticienne, mais d’adopter l’angle le plus « réaliste » pour toucher, pour capter l’essence de notre époque. Aucune autre représentation ne semble dès lors possible ou acceptable. L’abstraction n’est plus un style, c’est une réponse à un problème insoluble, à une situation indicible, à un décrochage au monde.
In this sense, the Great Salt Lake is an intense incarnation of a phenomenon of ubiquitous and entropic vacuousness; this savage globalization is clothed in flat tints and vivid hues, but it usually becomes noticeable only through its impervious banality. Everywhere, the substance and materiality of the contemporary landscape are breaking with the points of reference constituted by identity and time; they thus mutate into a reality that is ever more abstract, deficient, and illegitimate. My work is therefore no longer about opting for a posture or an approach to the plastic arts; instead, I try to adopt the most “realist” perspective I can, to capture the essence of our time. At this point, no other representation seems possible or acceptable. Abstraction is no longer a style; it is an answer to an insoluble problem, a response to an inexpressible situation, a way of disengaging from the world.

Les photographies de ce livre tentent ainsi de proposer des passerelles entre ce réel abstrait dont nous peinons à suivre l’évolution accélérée et notre inconscient nourri d’art et d’images. En replaçant par leur autonomie le spectateur comme acteur-créateur de son propre paysage, les œuvres activent un processus neg-entropique qui recrée du lien, de la consistance et de l’appartenance au réel. Face à ces territoires, dont on ne sait que la cohérence perdue, l’abstraction devient alors violemment réaliste. Dans cette atmosphère poussiéreuse, les paysages apparaissent, mais déjà se dérobent. Ils meurent en silence dans une esthétique de la disparition.
The photographs in this book try to create passageways between the abstract real—whose precipitate development is hard to follow—and our unconscious, which is filled with art and imagery. By placing their autonomy where the viewer as actor-creator of his or her own landscape had been located, the works activate a process of negative entropy; this process recreates some connection with, consistency in, and sense of belonging to the real. When faced with this kind of terrain, about which we know only the coherence that has been lost, abstraction becomes violently realist. It is a dusty atmosphere in which landscapes appear as already evading us. They die in silence in an aesthetics of demise.
