Produced between 2017 and 2022, FOSSIL deals with extraction, storage and use of minerals, and more specifically coal, along the 1,200 kilometres of the Rhine, from its source at Lake Constance to its estuary in the Netherlands. While FOSSIL is firmly rooted in reality, following the same production protocol as DUST and MARGES (unity of place, time of day and scale), the body of work embraces a radical artistic approach, close to black and white, establishing both a dialogue with the works of Malevich, Soulages and Ryman, a confrontation with the Anthropocene, and a reflection on our ability to look at, understand and appropriate our landscapes. So, what is it we see? Rocks underneath a microscope? Wrinkles on a hand? Icebergs or comets drifting through space? We project onto these works our own artistic references, as well as our vision of a world that is childlike, dreamlike, scientific or purely sensory... Within them, we encounter multiple cosmogonies, which I invite us to decipher, convinced of the pressing need to create, through the imagination, a sense of intimacy with the world around us.

“In that, Lenoir’s choice of the square format – which predominates in FOSSIL and TOPOLOGIES – reveals a desire to create a space of differentiation allowing the eye to move in multiple directions — horizontal, vertical, diagonal — and to enhance the formal and symbolic effects of the scenery by drawing our attention to the plasticity of these territories and the interplay of light and shadow. If his works possess such iconic power, it is because they embrace a certain impurity of the medium – one that flirts with painting and the graphic arts in order to fully reveal the underlying mechanisms of human intervention upon the scenery. ”

“Everything in it is useful, yet nothing beckons to it. Demanding neither effort nor fidelity. Giving itself all at once and forgotten in the same gesture. Excess to the point of absence. As though, in its immediate legibility and programmed neutrality, landscape had abandoned its promise of becoming a world for someone.”

“The mounds in the storage sites photographed in the Ruhr become painterly all-overs, or rather — given the predominance of blacks and whites within the terrain — agitated stains animated by a primal movement transforming them and making them go beyond the frame, much like those black waters seeping into earth and image, gradually eroding its contours. Much like the ink works of Henri Michaux, Jérémie Lenoir places us in a landscape that is no longer merely topographical but cosmogonic. His abstract compositions have gradually abandoned geometric rigour in favour of a primitive informality in which the world both originates and dissolves.”
